Itinerary

Begin your journey early from Aswan, setting off on the well-maintained 280km desert highway. The route takes approximately 3 hours each way, cutting through stunning desert landscapes. Ensure your vehicle has adequate fuel, and bring water and snacks for the drive.

Upon arrival at Abu Simbel, you’ll be greeted by the breathtaking façade of the Great Temple of Ramses II, with its four colossal 20-meter statues of the pharaoh. Take time to admire the remarkable engineering feat of both the original construction and the 1960s rescue operation that moved the entire complex to higher ground.

Venture inside the Great Temple to discover halls adorned with battle scenes and religious imagery. Don’t miss the solar alignment phenomenon, designed so that sunlight illuminates specific statues twice yearly. Adjacent is the smaller Temple of Hathor, dedicated to Queen Nefertari, showcasing the pharaoh’s devotion to his favorite wife.

After exploring the temples, visit the Abu Simbel visitor center to learn about the historic relocation project. The viewpoint overlooking Lake Nasser offers spectacular photo opportunities and a moment to appreciate the natural beauty surrounding these archaeological treasures.

Depart Abu Simbel by mid-afternoon for a comfortable return to Aswan before darkness falls. The drive back offers different perspectives of the desert scenery as the sun begins its descent, casting golden hues across the landscape.
